The problem: Where are the styles for the Search widget?
Modern browsers an Inspect tool for examining CSS class names and property settings. Usually, you right-click on any page element and choose Inspect or a similar command from the popup menu. However, I wanted more information about how the WordPress widgets worked. In my search, I found this great tutorial in the Shiba blog about customizing the search widget. The artist-writer also offers some lovely magnifying glass icons.
