WordPress Is Hiding Stuff – Screen Options

Scenario: I’m working on a WordPress online store using WooCommerce and my next task was to set up the main menu with the main product categories.

Problem: When I opened the Menus admin screen, Product Categories was not an option. Other WooCommerce online stores have product categories in their menus, so there had to be a way.

Non-obvious solution: The secret is WordPress Screen Options. On various admin screens, you can show or hide items by type so you can focus on only items that are appropriate to your site. However, it’s easy to forget that there might be useful types of information that are hidden from view. The Screen Options tab at the top of the screen is easy to overlook.

How-to: So here’s how to show those hidden item types on the Menus admin screen:

  1. Click Appearance>Menus to show the menu edit screen.
  2. At the top of the screen, click the Screen Options tab. A panel slides down with more menu item sources to add to your edit screen.

  3. Put a checkmark on the Product Categories item, and check any of the other items you’d like to use on your menus.

It’s easy, but only if you know where to look.
